Stevia is a zero calorie sweetener derived from stevia plant.
Stevia, unlike ordinary sugar, consists of stevioside – a substance that sweetens food. But when it breaks down, the glucose-containing particles will not be absorbed into the bloodstream and thereby affect glucose levels in the body. They get absorbed by the bacteria in the colon! Thus it helps in diabetes management, weight loss, skin care and much more.
While Stevia contains stevioside, a type of glycoside, it isn’t the only glycoside present in it. Stevia is home to other glycosides that relaxes the blood vessels, increases urination and facilitates the elimination of sodium from the body. This helps put less pressure on the cardiovascular system, thereby improving heart health and prevents conditions like atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.
Thanks to its properties of reducing bacterial growth in the mouth, Stevia is used as an additive in toothpaste and mouthwashes. It is said to prevent cavities and gingivitis.
